Long before I ever met my wife, she was involved in a similar relationship, age-wise. If she was older, I would have had the same amount of growing up to do. Sure, dating coworkers can cause problems, but in the long run it's no big deal. My parents were concerned about the age difference, but they didn't really have a say in the matter, and he eventually won them over anyway. But those red flags turn up in the relationship dynamics, not in the simple difference in age. This is particularly relevant if they work in the same place! Them being coworkers is also a concern. So if she considers living with your parents restrictive and harmful, or even if she'd just like some experience at managing her own bills, groceries, etc.

If you're going to go on a date with someone let it be with some integrity becuase you're actually interested in the girl. They came from a similar conservative background to yours. She'd have a lot of support from friends and roommates who are learning all this stuff at the same time. The trouble is I didn't really know what was reasonable here, dating in basildon essex hence the question. Problems arise only if they have different expectations or assumptions about how their relationship will work out.

Either make a joke of it or don't acknowledge it, but it is still going to come up a bunch and both parties have to be okay with it to deal with that.

To no ill effect, and in fact we're friends to this day. There's nothing abnormal about wanting to date someone who in your exact age cohort. My biggest concern would be that he won't want to do what she wants to do since he has done it already. It is important to integrate, at least to some degree, your friends and your partner.
